Products from the workshop at Givenich prison – Luxembourg

The non-profit association Défi-Job asbl was set up in 2002 to promote the socioprofessional reintegration of prisoners at the Givenich penitentiary centre (CPG), in the hope that stable, regular employment would reduce the risk of re-offending.
Défi-Job asbl is a social initiative offering fixed-term employment contracts of up to 24
months to prisoners and ex-prisoners who are particularly far removed from the labour
market. There can be no real social reintegration without the hope of finding a dignified place
in society.
PHILOSOPHY
Work is a key element of social cohesion. The time spent in prison must be organised in such
a way as to make this deprivation of liberty useful. The care provided to prisoners during their
stay in prison must enable them to acquire skills that are essential for sharing the values of
society and for successful reintegration. Successful reintegration is one of the best ways of
preventing repeat offending. It must be invested in as early as possible in the execution of
the sentence.

WORK, A TOOL FOR REINTEGRATION
The association offers jobs in its JAILBIRD carpentry and joinery workshops, as well as work
placements and secondments with partner private companies and local authorities. We offer
beneficiaries the opportunity to sign a real employment contract, for a maximum of 24
months, paid at the minimum social wage.
